Motorola to cut 4,000 more jobs in 2009

LOS ANGELES – Mobile handset maker Motorola Inc. said Wednesday it will cut 4,000 more jobs in 2009, in addition to 3,000 it announced in October.
The company said the move will save about $700 million a year starting in 2009, and total $1.5 billion in annual savings when combined with the previous cut.
Most of the new layoffs will hit the mobile devices business, while about 1,000 jobs are tied to corporate functions and other business units.
The move is the latest in cost-cutting measures by Motorola, which has been struggling to revive its business in recent years. When the cuts are complete, around 12,000 workers will have left the company since December 2007 when there were 66,000 employees, an 18 percent reduction. Last month, it announced it was freezing its pension plans and reducing executive pay.
The Schaumburg, Ill.-based company also said Wednesday it expects revenue for the fourth quarter to be between $7 billion and $7.2 billion, as it saw continued weakness in consumer demand and customer inventory reductions.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected, on average, $7.5 billion in revenue.
Shipments in the quarter hit around 19 million units, Motorola said. That's down 25 percent from the third quarter — a rare and steep decline for the holiday season — and off a whopping 54 percent from a year ago.
"It's not supposed to happen that way," said analyst Pablo Perez-Fernandez with Global Crown Capital, noting the first quarter is usually weaker than the fourth. "We think that things get worse for Motorola before they start getting better."
The company also said it expects a fourth-quarter net loss from continuing operations between 7 cents and 8 cents per share, including 6 cents per share of restructuring costs and other charges. The estimate did not include new charges for the layoffs announced Wednesday, which could widen the loss.
Analysts were looking for a profit of 3 cents per share.
"The actions we are taking today in our mobile devices business will allow us to further reduce our cost structure, and positions us for improved financial performance in 2009," said Motorola's co-chief executive, Sanjay Jha, in a statement.
Motorola shares fell 21 cents, or 4.9 percent, to close at $4.11 Wednesday, and were unchanged in after-hours trading following the announcement. The shares have lost more than 70 percent of their value since this time last year.
Douglas Ireland, an equity research associate at JMP Securities, said the company has failed to duplicate the success of the Razr phone, which came out in 2005, and is having continuing difficulties organizing a comeback.
The latest in its series of products, an iPhone look-alike with a touch-sensitive screen, the MotoSurf A3100, was unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, but it has yet to secure a carrier. The company said it is expected to start selling in Asia and Latin America by March.
In October, the company announced it would cut 3,000 jobs by April, most of them from the cell phone unit, and said it would focus on just three software systems: Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Mobile; P2K, its own system used on the Razr phone; and Android, a free operating system from Google Inc.
Jha said Motorola will have an Android phone by the 2009 holiday season.
"Their new strategy for Android-based phones may be a winner but it is at least two or three quarters from bearing fruit, which is an eternity on Wall Street," Ireland said.
Analyst Edward Snyder, the principal of Charter Equity Research, said Motorola has fallen far since 2006 when it was the No. 2 handset maker behind Nokia Corp.; it's now fighting for fifth place with Sony Ericsson.
He said the company was in a "handset death spiral" where it must churn out new models, even unprofitable ones, to maintain its relationship with mobile phone carriers.
"There's been no handset company that's ever turned it around," Snyder said. "They're down 28 or 30 points in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. They can still pull it out, but it's going to be a vastly smaller business than where it started."

Nokia N85

Bright Delight

Services and devices. The two core focus of the Finnish mobile phone giant, Nokia, have recently come full circle. And to showcase another well-equipped N-series device, we spent some quality time with the new Nokia N85 and here's our own assessment.

Finger Delight (Not)

There's much we'd like to discuss about the N85's basic design. With a streamlined and contoured layout, the slider phone has the usual navigation buttons as you might have seen on various slider phones such as the Nokia N81.

In particular, it adopts the dual sliding model akin to the Nokia N96 that hides four other buttons at the top of the device, which acts as the multimedia and dedicated gaming keys for the user. Like most of its recent devices, the N85's five-way navigation pad doubles up as a scroller for the Navi-wheel. As usual, we decided to switch the Navi-wheel off and do it the old fashioned way.

What we had no preparation for, is the stiffness of the navigation keys. This isn't an isolated problem either, as we found ourselves facing an unresponsive and flat keypad. It took us up to 40 seconds to type out a full test sentence. The device's sides and its back, however, are loaded with buttons that are easy to access, and are in fact useful.

Though you can easily unlock the phone with a slide of the display, the N85 also comes with a dedicated lock key on the right. This allows you to unlock your phone without requiring to slide the phone up or press buttons to awaken it. Its 5-megapixel camera located at the rear is well-protected by a sliding lens cover, but there are times when the cover accidentally slid open as we took it out of our pockets.

Power Efficiency Delight

With Nokia devices, it's gotten to a point when we are rarely surprised by the design and features of its newer devices. But the N85 did toss us a bone here: a 2.6-inch OLED screen. To say the least, we were wowed by the richness of the colors and screen brightness from the 16M colors OLED screen. This bodes especially well for Nokia's N-Gage platform, and we did have a good run with the screen's 240 x 320 resolution, though the stiff keys dampened the fun.
Music playback was the usual standard fare as with its other N-series devices, and with the introduction of its OLED screen, we took a closer look at its video playback capability. Video watching, even on a bright day out in the sun, was definitely possible but you won't be able to fully enjoy the well balanced colors due to the sunlight glare.

Also, OLED screens are supposedly more energy efficient. With a combination of multimedia playback, cellular usage and having Wi-Fi and Bluetooth active for a moderate amount of time, the 1200mAh battery performed as usual, lasting up to two days of usage, with no discernible improvement over other devices that comes close to its specifications.
A Delightful End?

If you are feeling as overwhelmed as we are with the number of Nokia devices, that's not the end of it, according to a possible development that was leaked on the web recently. But ultimately, we do hope there'll be more to look forward to. The Nokia N85 does bring something fresh to the table with its OLED screen on top of the usual N-series features, but stiff competition means Nokia needs to up the ante in the very near future.

Samsung Pangkas Capex Semikonduktor 2009

Dilansir melalui Reuters, Senin (5/1/2009), Samsung dikabarkan hanya akan menginvestasikan sekira USD1,5 hingga 2,3 miliar dalam industri semikonduktor mereka tahun ini. Angka ini menurun cukup drastis. Padahal sebelumnya, Samsung menyanggupi biaya investasi hingga USD5 miliar.

Pada Desember lalu, perusahaan elektronik raksasa dunia tersebut menyatakan akan memangkas sekira USD7 hingga 8 miliar capital expenditur yang mereka gelontorkan, dari sekira USD10 miliar capex yang ditargetkan pada tahun 2009 ini.

"Kelebihan kapasitas, meningkatnya kebutuhan SDM, menurunnya minat pasar, dan menurunnya harga chip, membuat perusahaan harus melakukan langkah untuk memangkas capex yang ada," ujar salah satu sumber Samsung
